Birthkeeping & mentoring

“The most important knowledge a woman can gather in preparation for birth is self knowledge - knowledge about what her mind and body needs to feel safe enough to trust her instinct and intuition. ”

Dr Rachel Reed

A birthkeeper (or doula) is here to support and nurture families to return to their inner knowing - to remember they are empowered in their journey of birthing. Sarah’s role as a birthkeeper and mentor is to help you return to that place of inner sovereignty by supporting you to learn and deepen into what is needed for you and your little one. We do this through live sessions, online or in-person and each session is tailored to suit what you need.

Sarah infuses her years of experience teaching Vedic wisdom to provide the space for deep transformation and communion with birth. She is here to help you unpack the unknown, and hold space for you to make this transition in the way that’s right for you. In each offering she incorporates Vedic teachings, Ayurveda, traditional patera wisdom and modern birthing tools to create the most inclusive support possible. Sarah is passionate about exploring birth as a rite of passage and incorporates what ancient practices have to offer us during this time.

What is a birthkeeper & mentor?

Someone who creates the space and conditions for you to feel safe to completely let go. A birthkeeper is like the midwives of old, whose duty is to help each family create the most love filled, expansive and also supported birthing experience possible. This can be through birthing education, mentoring, daily practices, and attending the birth with you and your loved ones. Ultimately, we are devoted to YOU, in whatever way you need. Another word for ‘birthkeeper’ is doula. We use the term birthkeeper to make this as inclusive as possible!

Sarah has trained with Soma Shakti, Birth From Within, Dr Rachel Reed, Liberated Lineage and more.

What are rites of passage?

Each season of life requires some kind of transition - the movement between one phase to the next. A rite of passage occurs during this experience of the ‘inbetween’. We experience rites of passage whether we pause to acknowledge them or not, but when we get busy or overwhelmed we tend to push right through and then find the need to actually digest and process what we went through hits us later. By actually honouring the season of transition by celebrating, and also mourning, during these times of change we can move into the next phase feeling open, free, and ready to meet what’s coming with love and confidence. Our modern world does not make the time for us to go through these transitions consciously, so we have to make the spaces for these experiences to unfold. This helps us feel less full and overwhelmed in our daily life, and helps our minds and bodies feel more relaxed, capable and grounded in daily life.

Why is this for me?

As a birthkeeper and mentor, my role is to listen to what you need and give what I can. We don’t always feel heard or seen by our caregivers, be they medical professionals or family members. Having someone support you through this process who is just there for you is often all we need. I’m here to offer what has been passed to me from the wise woman traditions of the world to help you feel seen and connected to birth. You may feel like having someone support you from start to finish, or you may wish to connect in when you feel throughout your pregnancy and postpartum. If you’re not sure what you need, reach out to Sarah to learn more.
